In early 2014, after a 1-year negotiation, Carl Hasselbarth, Esq. purchased Mark Pelersi’s Esq. CPA law and tax practice allowing Mark to retire. At that time, Carl moved into the office where Mark had been operating the business at 1568 Central Avenue in the Village of Colonie. Carl’s goal was and continues to be to effectuate as smooth a transition as possible for Mark’s clients and to learn as much as he can from the expertise Mark generated in his almost 40 year career in law. To that end, Carl easily decided to hire Annette Skinkle, the administrative assistant and paralegal Mark had employed for the past nine years.
The broad scope of skills Mark used to develop his business over the years and Carl’s diverse background makes Hasselbarth Law a unique practice that gives its clients an experience they cannot get anywhere else. Both Carl and Mark know how critical the management of tax considerations are to successfully running a business and a household and have made their mastery a career-long endeavor. Carl now prepares a healthy number of tax returns every year and more details about this service are available on our Tax Services page. Since purchasing Mark’s business, Carl has also expanded his expertise in this field to Tax Problems. It is often critical to hire an attorney to solve these problems, because, unlike with other tax professionals, an attorney can assert attorney-client privilege during federal and state investigations.
Carl’s tax expertise also gives him an edge in other practice areas he operates in such as estate planning & administration and real estate transactions. Carl is now the attorney of record on numerous estate plans Mark created during his career and routinely speaks with his clients about their plans to update them for changes in the client’s circumstances and/or in the law. Carl is also quickly becoming an expert in real estate transactions so he can meet the needs of his new clients, including real estate closings, foreclosures, evictions and other landlord tenant matters.
In law, as in many other businesses, one thing often leads to another. Carl often helps a client with one matter he’s experienced with and a satisfied client asks him to assist with one he is not as experienced with. Similarly, Carl may assist a client at one stage in a larger plan and both Carl and the client want to continue working together during later stages. These situations have allowed Carl to expand his knowledge of the law in new and fascinating directions that have taken him into the fields of matrimonial law, family law, employment law and collections, among other areas. Carl is fortunate to have numerous professionals at his disposal who are invested in his success to rely on for guidance when embarking on novel engagements. Carl also has demonstrated the wisdom to know which matters he can handle with the assistance of his support network and which he must refer to an attorney more focused on that practice area. Carl’s clients know that, which is why they place so much trust in his judgment.
